PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION

 

Students may take more than one credit each year in Physical and Health Education in grade 9, 10, 11 or 12.
NOTE: Many courses have an enhancement fee.  Costs per course vary.

Healthy Active Living – Female, Grade 9, Open

This course has a focus on collaboration through a variety of physical activities such as: badminton, volleyball, basketball, soccer, dodgeball, hockey, outdoor sports (ultimate beach volleyball, football, rugby) and games of low organization.  An introduction to weight training and interval training will be offered, as well as field trip to iBowl and/or Mixed Martial Arts.

Personal & Fitness Activities Live Fit I – Female, grade 10, Open

Students will be introduced to a variety of different fitness components with a focus on strength training, cardiovascular endurance, speed, power, flexibility, agility, coordination and stamina. This course will improve mental and physical fitness, enhance well-being and include sport specific training.

Personal & Fitness Activities Live Fit I – Male, Grade 10, Open

PPL4OF (French Immersion)

Healthy Active Living – Co-ed, Grade 12, Open

Individual programs are developed through a variety of weekly units such as: golfing, beach volleyball, hockey, tennis, bowling and billiards, as well as traditional on-campus team and individual sports. A weight training option is available as a choice in each unit.  SHSM certificates and activities can be completed in this course.

PLF4MI

Recreation & Healthy Active Living Leadership – Co-ed, Grade 12, University or College

This course enables students to explore the benefits of lifelong participation in active recreation and healthy leisure and to develop the leadership and coordinating skills needed to plan, organize and safely implement recreational activities at GCI.  This includes intramurals, the Athletic Banquet and feeder school events. Students will also participate in experiential active recreation through an off-campus trip to Blue Mountain. The course will prepare students for university and college programs in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Recreation and Leisure Management, Fitness & Health Promotion and Fitness Leadership.  SHSM certificates and activities can be completed in this course.

PSK4UI

Introductory Kinesiology, Grade 12, University

Prerequisite: A senior course in Science is strongly recommended.

This course prepares students for university or college programs in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Emergency Services, Life Sciences & Recreation and Sports Administration.  Topics include muscular and skeletal anatomy, cardio-respiratory systems, motor development, biomechanics and sociology of sport.  SHSM certificates and activities can be completed in this course.
