AMI1OI

Music, Instrumental (experienced), Grade 9, Open

This course focuses on instrumental (band) music and is for students with one or more years of experience on their brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument. Most of their time will be spent continuing to learn to play in a wide variety of styles, as well as understanding the foundations of music, and reflecting on personal progress.

 

AMI1OX                                                                                      

Music, Instrumental (beginner), Grade 9, Open                        

This course focuses on instrumental (band) music and is for students with no experience on a band instrument or those coming from Avenue Road P.S. Students will spend most of their time learning to play a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument, as well as understanding the foundations of music, how and why we listen to music, and reflecting on personal progress. This course is the same as AMI2OX. Students should take only one of these courses.

 

AMV1OI

Music, Vocal, Grade 9, Open

This course focuses on vocal/choral music and is at a level suitable for both beginning and experienced singers.  Students will spend most of their time learning to sing in a wide variety of styles. They will learn to sing with confidence in small groups and on their own, as well as understanding the foundations of music, how and why we listen to music, and reflecting on personal progress.

 

AVI1OI

Visual Arts, Grade 9, Open

This course is designed for anyone who would like to create art!  No previous art experience is required.  This course can also be used as a foundation for further study in both visual art and photography.  Students will become familiar with different art materials, including, but not limited to painting, drawing, clay, and printmaking.  Students will also learn about the elements and principles of design, and the expressive techniques and styles that can be applied to the creative process.  Lastly, students will learn how to communicate about a wide range of art, in particular, Canadian Art, and how to connect the art that they create beyond the classroom.

 

ADA2OI (English)

ADA2OF (French Immersion)

Dramatic Arts, Grade 10, Open

This course offers students an introduction to drama. You will be introduced to different dramatic forms, including mime, tableau, creative movement and vocal production. The final evaluation will take students through the various phases of a stage production.

 

AMG2OI

Music, Guitar, Grade 10, Open

This course is for students interested in learning to play guitar that have no previous experience.  Students will learn to strum chords, explore different playing techniques, and read music.  Guitars will be provided.  This course is available to students in grades 10, 11, 12.

 

AMI2OI

Music, Instrumental, Grade 10, Open

Prerequisite: AMI1OI or AMI1OX or AMI2OX is required.

This course is a continuation of AMI1OI, AMI1OX and AMI2OX (grade 9 & 10 beginning instrumental music & grade 9 experience instrumental music) and focuses on instrumental music.  Students will spend most of their time continuing to learn to play their brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument in a wide variety of styles as well as understanding the foundations of music as it relates to musicand reflecting on personal progress.

 

AMI2OX

Music, Instrumental Beginner, Grade 10, Open                         

This course focuses on instrumental (band) music and is for students with no experience on a band instrument or those coming from Avenue Road P.S. Students will spend their time learning to play a band instrument, as well as understanding the foundations of music, how and why we listen to music, and reflecting on personal progress. This course is the same as AMI2OX. Students should take only one of these courses.

 

AMV2OI

Music, Vocal, Grade 10, Open

Prerequisite: AMV1OI is recommended in order to be successful

This course is a continuation of AMV1OI (grade 9 vocal) and focuses on vocal/choral music. Students will spend most of their time continuing to learn to sing with confidence alone and in small groups in a wide variety of styles, as well as expanding musical knowledge as it related to analysis, foundations, and personal reflections.

 

AVI2OI

Visual Arts, Grade 10, Open                                                                  

Prerequisite: AVI1OI is recommended, but not necessary.

This course is designed for anyone who would like to create art! Students will further develop new techniques using materials such as: paint, clay, drawing and printmaking materials. Application of the elements and principles of design continue at this level and there is an emphasis on the creative process.  A sketchbook is needed for the course.

 

ADA3OI

Dramatic Arts, Grade 11, Open

Prerequisite: ADA2OI is recommended in order to be successful

This course expands on concepts learned in Grade 10. An emphasis is placed on studying character development through different forms such as monologues and scene studies. Students will also study different dramatic forms such as docudrama.

 AMI3MI

Music, Instrumental, Grade 11, University or College

Prerequisite: AMI 2OI is required

This course is a continuation of AMI2OI (Grade Ten Instrumental) and focuses on instrumental music.  Students will spend most of their time continuing to learn how to play their brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument in a wide variety of styles. Students will continue to explore music foundations as it relates to composition and will begin to connect music history to musical analysis.  Participation in the GCI Concert Band is strongly suggested.

AMV3MI

Music, Vocal, Grade 11, University or College

Prerequisite: AMV2OI or Departmental permission

This course is a continuation of AMV2OI (Grade Ten Vocal) and focuses on vocal/choral music. Students will spend most of their time continuing to learn how to sing with confidence alone and in groups in a wide variety of styles.  Students will continue to explore music foundations and will begin to connect music history to musical analysis.  Participation in the GCI Concert Choir is strongly suggested.

 

AVI3MI

Visual Arts, Grade 11, University or College

Prerequisite: AVI1OI or AVI2OI

This course enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual art. Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes through drawing, painting, sculpting, and printmaking. Critical analysis and self-evaluation techniques are developed.  It is recommended that students supply their own brushes, drawing pencils, and high quality sketchbook for this course.

AWQ3MI

Photography, Grade 11, University or College

Students are introduced to the basic principles of photographic composition and traditional darkroom techniques. Course work includes building a pinhole camera, SLR camera knowledge, studio assignments, and an introduction to digital photography and photo editing using PhotoShop.  Course enhancement fee is $75.

ADA4MI

Dramatic Arts, Grade 12, University or College

Prerequisite: ADA3OI

Students will learn about different schools of acting and methods of character development and apply these in developing characters for performance. Important periods in theatre history, styles of theatre, and theatre’s influence on societies and cultures will be studied. Students will also learn about the technical elements of staging theatrical productions.

 

AMI4MI

Music, Instrumental, Grade 12, University or College

Prerequisite: AMI3MI

This course is a continuation of AMI3MI (Grade Eleven Instrumental) and focuses on instrumental music.  Students will spend most of their time continuing to learn to play their brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument as well as listening to music from a wide variety of styles. Students should expect to continue their learning of music fundamentals, history, and analysis.  Participation in the GCI Concert Band is strongly suggested.

 

AMV4MI

Music, Vocal, Grade 12, University or College

Prerequisite: AMV3MI or Departmental permission

This course is a continuation of AMV3MI (Grade Eleven Vocal) and focuses on vocal/choral music. Students will spend most of their time continuing to learn to sing with confidence alone and in small groups as well as listening to music from a wide variety of styles. Students should expect to continue their learning of music fundamentals, history and analysis. Participation in the GCI Concert Choir is strongly suggested.

 

AVI4MI

Visual Arts, Grade 12, University or College

Prerequisite: AVI3MI or AVI3OI

This course builds on the skills and knowledge acquired in AVI3MI and will help to prepare students for a creative path into post secondary studies.   Students will use advanced understanding of techniques to create a body of original works displaying personal expression and growth for the purpose of building a portfolio.  More emphasis on interpretation and critical analysis is developed at this level. Students are expected to purchase a high quality sketchbook and additional materials to complete their mini-suite pieces for the culminating unit.

AVI4MI

Visual Arts, Grade 12, University or College

Prerequisite: AVI3MI or AVI3OI

Prerequisite: AWQ3MI or AWQ3OI

This course is a continuation from the Grade 11 photography course with the emphasis on portfolio development.  Traditional black and white photography in combination with digital photography is an emphasis of the program.  Students should supply own digital camera. Course enhancement fee is $75.
