English, Grade 9, Academic

Throughout the course, students will study various types of writing, including short stories, Shakespearean comedy, a novel and speeches on the topic of course themes and learnings. The focus for the course is on analytical writing, effective oral presentation skills, and developing critical thinking skills. Assignments include presentations, paragraph and essay writing, graphic texts and non-fiction writing. Digital tools are used during the creation of written and oral texts.

ENG2DI

English, Grade 10, Academic

Prerequisite: ENG1DI

Throughout the course various texts are studied. These include short stories, a Shakespearean tragedy, novels, poetry and non-fiction. Students are expected to read independently as well as to hone their essay writing and oral presentation skills. Analysis and critical thinking are a main focus throughout the course. Good use of rhetorical devices within a speech and a media presentation will also be included in this course.

ENG2PI

English, Grade 10, Applied

Prerequisite: ENG1DI

Throughout this course, various texts are studied such as short stories, videos, news articles and a core novel. Course themes include identity, tolerance, media influences and suspense. Students will demonstrate skills such as analyzing and creating written and visual texts, as well as reflecting on learning strategies.

ENG3CI

English, Grade 11, College

Prerequisite: ENG2PI

In this course students will explore non-fiction writing and reality fiction. They will also examine poetry, short stories and a novel about the survival of the human spirit. Other units will examine visual texts, advertising and the communication skills needed for college.

ENG3EI

English, Grade 11, Workplace

Prerequisite: ENG2PI

Workplace communication skills are the focus in this course. Students will write for various situations and read to improve comprehension. Students will also read a novel, view films and create media projects related to the course literature. This course is designed for students who plan to enter the workforce after high school.

Throughout this course students will study visual texts, Shakespearean tragedy, quest novels, and non-fiction writing. Students will be expected to read independently, do individual and group presentations, and write a variety of essays. Various assignments will challenge the students to become independent workers and communicators. Digital tools are used during the creation of written and oral texts.

NBE3UI

English: Understanding Contemporary, Grade 11, University

PrerequisiteENG2DI

Throughout this course, the focus will be on First Nations, Metis, and Inuit (FNMI) texts and voices from various periods and cultures.  This course will also examine the perspectives and influence of texts that relate to those cultures.  Students will also create oral, written, and media texts to explore their own ideas and understanding, focusing on the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life, and to prepare for grade 12 English.

English, Grade 12, College

Prerequisite: ENG3CI

Throughout the course students examine non-fiction on the internet, as well as films, plays and novels with socially complex issues. Students will read a second novel independently, and write an essay. Various assignments will develop the communication skills and work habits needed for college.

ENG4EI

English, Grade 12, Workplace

Prerequisite: ENG3EI or ENG3CI

This course is designed for students who plan to enter the workforce after high school. Students will practice important reading and writing strategies, read a novel, explore career options, view films and create media projects related to the course literature.

ENG4UI

English, Grade 12, University

Prerequisite: ENG3UI or NBE3UI

In this course students will explore novels about redemption and social justice, poetry, podcasts, a play about human relationships and identity in non-fiction texts. Students will complete a literary research project based on a novel that is read independently. Critical thinking skills and the communication of academic analysis is emphasized throughout this course. Digital tools are used during the creation of written and oral texts.

Studies in Literature, Grade 12, College

Prerequisite: ENG3CI

Throughout this course students will discover the beginnings of comedy and tragedy, philosophy, poetry, folktales, romance and Children’s Literature. Students will also study modern stories and films. Students will complete an independent study about their favourite author, and assessments will be designed to reflect college level expectations.

ETS4UI

Studies in Literature, Grade 12, University

Prerequisite: ENG3UI

Throughout this course students will discover the beginnings of comedy and tragedy, philosophy, poetry, folktales, romance and Children’s Literature. They will also explore modern stories and films, and complete an independent study about two authors within a genre of their choice. Assessments will be designed to reflect university level expectations.

Writer’s Craft, Grade 12, College

Prerequisite: ENG3CI

This course is for students who love creative writing, and who want to learn how to improve their writing skills. Students will have an opportunity to try their hand at various types of writing including poetry, journalism, pulp fiction, scripts and short stories. Assessments will be designed to reflect college level expectations.

Prerequisite: ENG3UI

OLC4OI

Literacy Course

This is a required course for students who have yet to pass the OSSLT after two attempts. It covers the skills needed to establish literacy and explores a variety of texts including newspapers, novels, websites and documentaries.
