Three Galt Collegiate Institute (GCI) students, Claire, Faiza, and Eyshah, have raised $950 for Haven House, a local women’s shelter operated by Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region.

The impressive sum was collected through a student-organized Silent Auction. The event showcased a variety of generously donated items from local businesses and community groups. Local businesses truly came together to support this cause, with donations ranging from gift certificates for lunch with the Chief of Police to gourmet food baskets.

“We are incredibly proud of Claire, Faiza, and Eyshah for their initiative and dedication to supporting women in need,” said Dan Reiss, staff sponsor of the GCI Women’s Alliance, the student group the young women lead. “Their drive and organizational skills are truly inspiring, and this fundraiser serves as a fantastic example for the entire GCI community.”

The Women’s Alliance at GCI is a student-led group committed to raising awareness of issues facing women and women-identifying folks at the school. The group organizes various events throughout the year to promote inclusivity, equality, and support for those in need.

The $950 donation will directly benefit Haven House, providing crucial support for women and children seeking refuge from domestic violence. Haven House offers emergency shelter, crisis intervention counselling, and support programs to help women rebuild their lives. This donation will have a significant impact, contributing to essential programs offered by the shelter.

The compassion and commitment demonstrated by these young women is truly inspiring.”
