At the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), we know teaching and curriculum are the foundation for student success. We also know that the spaces where students learn matter for their growth and development.

That is why this monthly feature will highlight the different spaces across the WRDSB that help students learn, connect and grow independently.

From collaborative study areas to creative and innovative spaces, each featured element helps students succeed. The hard work of our Facility Services team shows our commitment to building a system where all students are provided with the opportunities to access their chosen pathway in learning and life.

Galt Collegiate Institute (GCI) – Accessible Bus Turnaround

Why it Shines

Staff at Galt Collegiate Institute (GCI) reached out to Facilities Services to find a safe and efficient way for buses transporting students who require the accessible entrance to drop them off directly beside that door.

With the help of Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR), the team came up with a solution: a new turnaround on Dando Avenue. This allows the smaller buses to pull in, drop off, and pick up students without needing to back up. This change improves safety, reduces travel distance for students, and helps make daily routines smoother.

“The turnaround has greatly improved the flow of traffic on Dando Avenue and has made drop-off and pick-up times safer and less stressful,” said Pauline Carpeneto, supervision monitor at GCI. “Everyone appreciates a better start and end to their day.”

Edna Staebler Public School – Gymnasium Lighting Upgrade

Why it Shines

The gymnasium at Edna Staebler Public School received an upgraded LED lighting system. The new lights help brighten the space to give the gym a clean, modern appearance. Importantly, switching to LED lighting helps:

  • Reduce energy use
  • Supports energy-saving costs
  • Create a more sustainable learning environment

This upgrade is a welcome addition for physical education classes, sports and school events.

Jacob Hespeler Secondary School (JHSS) – Outdoor Courts

Why it Shines

The outdoor courts at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School (JHSS) have been revitalized. Working on the space has been an exciting and welcomed project for staff, students and the school community. The work to bring it back to life included:

  • Trimming vegetation
  • Repairing asphalt
  • Repainting and re-lining the play areas

The renewed courts now support sports, such as:

  • Basketball
  • Pickleball
  • Tennis

These improvements create a vibrant outdoor environment that students, staff and community members will be able to enjoy for many years to come.
