On Remembrance Day, across the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), students and staff were hard at work, engaging in learning opportunities, classroom activities and school-wide efforts to commemorate and honour the heroes who have served and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict, and peace.

We want to share just a few examples from WRDSB schools and sites:

Breslau Public School

At Breslau Public School, students and staff came together for an assembly that included handmade poppies decorations to mark Remembrance Day.

Coronation Public School

Students, staff and community members at Coronation Public School in Cambridge also came together for a ceremony of remembrance.

Elizabeth Ziegler Public School

At Elizabeth Ziegler Public School in Waterloo, student artwork took a prominent place to help inspire students, staff, families and all who pass it to take a moment to reflect for Remembrance Day.

Galt Collegiate Institute

At Galt Collegiate Institute in Cambridge, students and staff worked together to mark the day in a number of ways. Members of the school’s history club collected stories, found poems and researched veterans to guide the school community through past events. They put together a 30 minute presentation including an activity that was shared simultaneously with every class in the school.

Originally made in 2020 by students in the manufacturing tech class, metal poppies recognizing past GCI students who served were also on display in front of the school, to support everyone at GCI in remembering the past, and looking towards the future in recognition of Remembrance Day. These were paired with new memorials, created by the construction tech class.

WRDSB Education Centre

At the WRDSB Education Centre, staff came together to hear from Student Trustee Devansh Lakhanpal, an active member of the Air Cadet Program and Lieutenant-Colonel Stephen Coe, who serves as a Vice-Principal in the WRDSB.

It is important for us all to pause on Remembrance Day to reflect on the past, acknowledge the challenges of our present, and hope for a more peaceful future.
